Jalandhar city

Jalandhar is a city located in the north Indian state of Punjab. Jalandhar was ruled by the Hindus and the Mughals in succession and is believed to be the oldest city in Punjab. Jalandhar city was referred to as Prasthala and as Jullundur at the time of British Raj and is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical monuments and traditional values.

This town of great antiquity today has become a highly industrialized centre and is an important centre of commercial activity. It is India's foremost producer of world class sports equipment’s. Jalandhar is also known as the town of sports. Most of the sports materials that are manufactured in Jalandhar are exported to various countries. The city also has the distinction of producing some of the best sportsmen in the country.  Many highly successful companies have grown up in the city and surrounding areas.  Its steel and iron re-rolling mills, rubber goods, electric goods, automobile parts, and sewing machine factories and handloom products are also very famous. It is one of the biggest centres of the vernacular press in India.

History of Jalandhar

Jalandhar is an ancient city and has a rich past. The city is named after Jalandhar, a demon king, who finds a mention in the Puranas and Mahabharata. According to a legend, Jalandhar was the capital of the kingdom of lav, son of Rama. Some also believe that Jalandhar is said to have derived its name from the vernacular term `Jalandhar’ means area inside the water. Geography and Climate of Jalandhar

Jalandhar is situated between the fertile agricultural land of River Beas and Sutlej. The city is bounded by Hoshiarpur District in the North-East Kapurthala and Nawashahar in the east, Kapurthala District in the West and Firozpur and Ludhiana districts in the South.

The city experiences its summer season from the middle of March to the end of June.  The month of July, August and early parts of September are the months of monsoon season. Jalandhar has a rich cultural heritage which makes it one of the most popularly visited places in Punjab. Baba Sodal Fair

This fair is held in memory of a local child deity Sodal on his death anniversary. This fair falls in the month of September and the venue is near the Smadh of Baba Sodal where his portrait is adorned with garlands. There is also a tank in the area where people take a dip. At the end of the fair offerings are distributed among the pilgrims and they sprinkle a few drops on their body.

Harballabh Fair

This fair takes place in the month of December. Harballabh Fair is one of the biggest musical fair which involves a music fest of classical music, both vocal and instrumental. This festival showcases some of the classical music components that have always been a part of the Jalandhar history. Participants from different parts of the country come here to be part of this musical extravaganza. The fest held over a period of three days is hosted on the grounds of the Devi Talab Mandir. This fair is conducted successfully for the past 138 years. The Government of India has recognized this festival as one of the National Festivals of Music.
