Jalandhar is situated between the intensively irrigated and very fertile agricultural land of River Beas and Sutlej. Spread over a huge area of 2,624 sq. km, Jalandhar occupies 5.3 % of the total geographical area of the State. Jalandhar is the administrative headquarter of Jalandhar district. It is one of the largest and densely populated districts of Punjab and is part of Doaba region of Punjab.

Geographically,  Jalandhar is situated at 31°33’00 North Latitude and 75°56’99 East Longitude, with an average elevation of 230 meters about 754.5 feet.  Jalandhar is located at a distance of 146 kms from state capital Chandigarh. It is at a distance of 350 Kms from Delhi on Delhi-Amritsar Highway. Jalandhar is surrounded  by  Kapurthala, Tarn Taran and Amritsar cities in the North-west , Hoshiarpur in the north-east, Garhshankar and Anand Sahib in the east, Phagwara and Ludhiana in the south-east, Nakodar in the south, Moga, Faridkot and Ferozepur in the south-west . The city is easily accessible by well-established railway network. Jalandhar has decent road connectivity to all the adjoining major cities of the state as well as other states of India. Nearest Airport is RajaSansi Airport, Amritsar at a distance of 90 kms.

Climate of Jalandhar

Jalandhar has a humid subtropical climate characterized by cool winters and hot summers. Jalandhar distinctly experiences all the four seasons with climate being dry on the whole, except during the brief southwest monsoon season.

Summer Season

ClimateThe summer season of Jalandhar begins from the middle of March and ends in the month of June. During the summer season, Jalandhar experiences a very dry weather. Temperatures in the summer vary from average highs of around 48 °C to average lows of around 25 °C.

During the summer season scorching dust laden winds blow over the region. Temperature rises rapidly with the onset of summer and reaches the extreme in the month of June.

June is normally the hottest month and the day temperatures on individual days may reach above 45 degrees. The relative humidity of the air during the summer is very low in Jalandhar.

Monsoon Season

The monsoon season extends from end of June till the middle of September. With the arrival of monsoon season temperature during day drops down substantially and brings a welcome relief from the scorching summer heat. The average temperature during this season is around 35° C. In the Jalandhar district, the average annual rainfall is 703.0 mm. About 70 per cent of the annual rainfall in the district is received during the monsoon season while the remaining rainfall comes as thunderstorms in the summer and some rainfall in the winter. The month of July receives highest rainfall. During the rainy season, humidity is very high.
 

Winter Season

Towards mid-September rainfall decreases considerably and there is also sudden drop in temperature. This post-monsoon period lasts till the mid of November. During October and November months the weather is comparatively pleasant.
From the end of November the temperature starts falling which marks the beginning of winter season which lasts till the month of March. The mean daily maximum temperature is about 19 °C and the daily minimum temperature is about 6 degrees. At times temperature falls to a low of -5 °C (23 °F) which usually occurs in the month of January. During winter season cold waves blow over Jalandhar.

Demographics of Jalandhar

As per provisional reports of Census India, population of Jalandhar in 2011 is 862,196; of which male and female are 458,015 and 404,181 respectively. Average literacy rate in the city is 85.50 percent. The total literates in Jalandhar city are 665,625 of which 363,500 are males while 302,125 are females. As per figure from Census India report on 2011 total children within the age limit of 0-6 years are 83,669. The child forms 9.70 % of total population of Jalandhar City.
